The Trouble with Transgender – Presentation at Radfem Reboot

Hai! Tribbles are cute when it’s just one, but they are deadly when they suffocate the Enterprise. Analogy!

These are my notes from my presentation at Radfem Reboot, Portland, Oregon. I was going to write a blog post that was more formal, but I am too tired. If you have questions about any of this, please leave a comment.

GROUND RULES FOR MY TALK

1. GENDER IS THE FOUNDATION OF MALE DOMINATION

2. GENDER IS A WAR – A WAR AGAINST WOMEN

3. GENDER IS PERFORMANCE THAT PROVIDES THE FOUNDATION OF MALE DOMINATION OVER FEMALES

4. GENDER NEEDS TO BE DESTROYED IF WE SEEK TO OVERTHROW PATRIARCHY

5. TRANS WOMEN ARE MALE AND TRANS MEN ARE FEMALE

6. WOMEN-ONLY ORGANIZING AND THE ABILITY TO ESTABLISH A BOUNDARY BASED ON SEX IS A KEY COMPONENT OF REJECTING RAPE CULTURE.

7. RAD FEMS WANT TO ABOLISH GENDER, TRANS WANT TO KEEP GENDER BECAUSE TRANS CANNOT EXIST WITHOUT GENDER. THIS IS A HEAD ON CONFLICT IN THE FUTURE OF FEMINISM

8. IF YOU DISAGREE WITH ANY OF THESE STATEMENTS, YOU CAN STAY AND REMAIN QUIET OR YOU CAN LEAVE.

“Disrespect is crucial. Disrespect for the cultures, values and institutions of male domination is the very foundation and sine qua non of feminism.” Sheila Jeffreys on religion, equally applicable to gender.

Females: Silenced By Trans*

July 6, 2012

As Females, we have devoted much time to supporting Trans* causes. Why are we doing this, when it seems clear that Trans* does not extend us the same respect?

Abortion: Here. Here. Here. Here. Here.

Free Speech: Here. Here.

Rape: Here.

Birth Control: Here.

Add your own links to comments, articles and the assorted detritus of the Internet where Trans* people make it very clear that they don’t give a flying fuck for Females.

We need to change this.

I Wish I Was Making This Shit Up

“If a penis is on a woman then it’s not male genitalia, it’s her penis, it’s a woman’s penis, it’s woman’s genitalia. Just like if a vulva is on a man it’s not female genitalia, it’s his vulva, it’s a man’s vulva, it’s male genitalia. The only person who get’s to define those body parts is the person who has them. Not you, not anybody else, just that person. So no, lesbians don’t like “biological women” and saying that is really fucking cissexist. If you prefer vulvas on your sexual partners that’s fine, we’re all allowed to have a preference, but it’s not that you prefer “girl parts” it’s that you prefer vulva and you don’t like penis. Those body parts are not inherently tied to any one sex or gender. Being sexually assaults, raped, abused, beaten, or any other sort of violation does NOT give you an excuse to be a cissexist asshole and start defining people’s body parts for them. NOBODY gets to do that, that’s fucked up. People have the right to choose how they define their own bodies and their own body parts. Having panic attacks from penises doesn’t make you transphobic but you’re clearly a cissexist douche for reasons that have nothing to do with your fear of penises and you need to spend some time reevaluating your language and the ways you relate to other people.”

Pride, In The Name of Lesbians

Over the last few years, it has become abundantly clear that the GLBT Movement is more interested in preserving the status quo of American Society, so long as gays, lesbians and transgender people can participate. We seek access to marriage, the most fundamental of patriarchy’s mechanisms that ensures the servitude of females to males. We support hate crimes legislation, thus propping up a criminal justice system that disproportionately negatively impacts females and people of color.

These things are fine, I suppose. “Equality” is useful, as far as it goes. But for lesbians, the Females of the community alphabet soup, we have noticed that our needs and our voices have been erased in this push for “everything is everything” equality. Recently, Corey Reidy, speaking at the Mobilizing and Organizing from Below conference, told the audience that she identified as “Queer,” not “Lesbian,” because of the negative connotations the word “Lesbian” has.

Last issue, Steve Charing highlighted the opening of The Den (Baltimore OUTloud, The Den Opens Its Doors to LGBT Youth),  a safe space for GLBT youth ages 13 to 24. Kalima Young, one of the driving forces behind The Den, told Steve that “youth have suffered from our unwillingness as adults to address structural issues such as poverty, classicism, racism and sexism in the LGBTQ community that directly impacts where and how youth experience the LGBTQ community.”
