GUEST POST: You are not a feminist

October 22, 2013

Stop coopting the term “feminist.”

If you privilege trans concerns over woman-born-women’s concerns, you are not a feminist.

If you believe that the question of “what does it mean to be a woman?” has been settled, and that the only legitimate answer is that a woman is anyone who declares that identity, you are not a feminist.

If you regard a love of pink, frills, makeup, and high heels as evidence that a person is really female deep inside, you are not a feminist.

If you believe that being a woman is based on personal conviction, and that body, genetics, and socialization are irrelevant, you are not a feminist.

If you use the phrase “radical feminist” as an ugly epithet, you are not a feminist.

If you uncritically believe in “brain sex,” you are not a feminist.

If you insist that everyone who self-identifies as a woman must be one and that such a self-identification needs no explanation or justification, you are not a feminist.

If you believe that the declaration “I am a woman!” must never be questioned or critically examined, you are not a feminist.

If you spend more time railing against “lesbian transphobia” than you do against the people who rape, disparage and degrade those who do not conform to gender expectations, you are not a feminist.

If you don’t care about lesbophobia within the trans community, you are not a feminist.

If you believe that lesbians are just another group with “cis privilege,” you are not a feminist.

If you scoff at the concerns lesbians have brought up about about trans women’s presence in women-only space, you are not a feminist.

If you believe that gender nonconforming children need medical or psychological evaluation, you are not a feminist.

If you believe that people who do not identify with gender stereotypes are outliers who are “gender queer,” you are not a feminist.

If you have summarily dismissed this blog post as “transphobic,” you are not a feminist.

Being Feminist Means Telling Lesbians To Have Sex With Men

April 29, 2013

“Feminist” Facebook page with 25,000 likes posts homophobic article discussing Lesbian sexuality and how Lesbians need to learn to appreciate penis so Lesbians and “people with penises” can have “fun” together.

The punch line? The article was posted by a 23-year old  woman.

Like, I have been a Lesbian longer than you’ve been alive.

If you think Lesbian Sexuality involves penis, you are doing it wrong.

So, it’s bad enough that, on a theoretical level, a feminist woman cannot follow an analysis about compulsory heterosexuality, etc.

There’s the additional HAVE YOU NO SHAME factor of yet another woman completely failing to consider how this issue of Trans Inclusion IMPACTS LESBIANS.

Lesbians – we must have some cloak of invisibility that makes any kind of “intersectional” analysis inapplicable to us.

One of the charges Transgender Warriors and their Signal-Boosting Liberal Allies regularly lodge against Radical Feminists is that Radical Feminists are “biological determinists” for knowing that human biology exists.

According to these folks, biological determinism makes us Nazis and KKK members and right-wingers. Transgender Warriors and Outstanding Liberal Allies engage in this blitz attack on Women to ensure that the dominant message Popular Liberal Media hears is that Transgender Ideology is a progressive path towards “liberation” and Feminists are bad.

Authors much smarter than I have deconstructed Gender Identity for the retrogressive, conservative, women-hating philosophy it is (Hi Sheila Jeffreys! Hi pretty much every Radical Feminist blogger).

Letter to the Community

On March 28, an activist named Red Durkin posted a petition on Change.org asking artists and attendees to boycott the Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival until organizers fully and openly welcome all self-identified women.  This petition has intensified a long-running debate about and within the Festival, a debate that has often included intense misrepresentations about the political heart of this gathering.  There is no doubt that complex political debate is healthy and necessary within our communities; however, a boycott, within this context, fails to advance resolution and only seeks to exact damage.  As the Festival’s producer for her full 38 years, I write today to clarify the festival’s herstory, intention and my desire for understanding within our communities, as well as to clarify where I stand on these issues. Enjoy this audio from Lindsay Spilman, a heterosexual woman who suffers from gender identity disorder (by her own statements) and who sexually harasses women on social media.

Having gender identity disorder does not give you the right to sexually harass women.

This is your brain on gender identity disorder, according to Lindsay Spilman.

A female in a relationship with a male is in a heterosexual relationship.

Your gender identity disorder doesn’t give you license to sexually harass women. Does it?

Just stop talking.

Seriously.

UPDATE: Lindsey Spillman returns, claiming that women who have been raped are bigots and misogynists for not prosecuting their rapists.

Repeat a Lie Often Enough, It Becomes True

In another lifetime, when I was young, I was very active in the effort to amend Maryland’s anti-discrimination law to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation. I believed then, as I believe now, that sexual orientation discrimination is, in fact, sex discrimination. However, my feelings on this are irrelevant, as Maryland law made quite clear that sexual orientation discrimination and sex discrimination were two different things. So, many hundreds of people, over the course of many years, worked doggedly to change the law.

Looking back on this effort now, this History that is also “my life,” myths abound about what happened in Maryland during the mid-1990s to early 2000s.

One of the Great Myths about Gender Identity legislation in Maryland is that there was a secret Gay plot to strip Gender Identity protections from a bill to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation. The Secret Plot Myth gets repeated even today.

Toxic Sludge is Good for You

February 22, 2013

The most important book I have read about use of media and public relations to manipulate public opinion is Toxic Sludge Is Good for You.  If you are not familiar with this book, trust me, it is worth the read.  Essentially, the book details how powerful interests manipulate the media to get you to smoke cigarettes even though they kill you, get unhealthy cosmetic surgery, and support fracking. It’s about how to Jedi Mind Trick a populace into thinking porn is awesome, women are objects, and Real Women have penises.

The Transgender Movement has done a remarkable job to convincing you that Toxic Sludge is Good for You.  They’ve done an amazing job in 20 years, by coattailing on the movement for gay and lesbian rights and spinning a woman’s reticence to share private intimate space like a locker room with a man with a penis as bigoted and hateful. In Maryland, the latest Toxic Sludge we are being force-fed comes in the form of Senate Bill 449, the Fairness for All Marylanders (Except Women) Act.

If you repeat a lie often enough, does it become true?

Americans gave up the idea-or tried to, or pretended to-that there are certain characteristics and qualities that are essentially black and essentially white a long time ago. At the very least we can say that it would be considered wildly offensive and thoroughly idiotic to articulate ideas like that now. Yet somehow we don’t think twice about wanting to be ‘like a man’ or unlike a ‘girly-girl.’ As if those ideas even mean anything. Like which man? Iggy Pop? Nathan Lane? Jesse Jackson? Jesse Helms? It is a staggeringly unsophisticated way to think about being a human being, but smart people do it all the time.

I received an email from Equality Maryland today!

Can you find the typo?

It asked me to sign up for its Lobby Day in Annapolis in February.

Now, I like a good lobby day as well as the next person. I read on.

“While 2012 was an incredible year for Maryland’s LGBT communities and our allies our work is not done. Transgender Marylanders remain unprotected in state law from discrimination in employment, housing, places of public accomondation (sic) and credit.”

Um.

Well.

No, that’s not entirely true. [...]
