In which a white heterosexual man tells a longtime member of the Gay community he is oppressing him: http://pamshouseblend.firedoglake.com/2012/01/17/rupaul-believes-trans-people-should-f-off-if-we-object-to-being-called-tries/

I like the one comment in the comments section:

“Seriously, who cares? RuPaul may be “transportive,” but he, like many drag performers is insulting to women. Drag is comparable in many ways to the black-face performers of the old minstrel shows. It is a parody of women. It can be amusing, but is often actually insulting.”

I don’t know entirely how I feel about men in drag, but I think in some ways it is a men, a group in power, doing a parody of women, a disempowered group. Drag kings are nowhere near as popular as drag queens, especially in the straight community for entertainment. It may be reflective of disinterest or a lack of drag kings, but if it’s the latter, why is that the case?

Anyway, she ends her comment with this killer line:

“Not that I would expect a lot of trangender people who claim to be women to actually understand…”

It’s always bizarre to see “transwomen” speak out against depictions of “men in dresses” as “transphobic.” I’m like “hi, meet transphobia’s more dangerous father, misogyny.”

        They don’t see it.

“In our culture one person can write a letter to the network and they shut something down. It’s unfortunate. But I love the word ‘tranny.’

…You have to go to the intent of the person saying it. Lance Bass, his intent would never be to be derogatory. Never. So, you know, that’s really ridiculous. And I hate the fact that he’s apologized. I wish he would have said, ‘F-you, you tranny jerk!’

In the ACT UP age, we called ourselves queers because we earned the right—we took the word back. But in reality, once you go even deeper, you know, you have to come from intent. And black folks call themselves the n-word all the time. It’s because the intent is coming from a place of love.

If the intent is coming from a place of hatred, that’s different. But you can’t legislate intent. There’s no way to do it. So, the truth is, you have to fix that individually on a one-by-one basis. If somebody calls you a green martian, would you be offended by it? No, you wouldn’t be. Why? Because you know you’re not a green martian.

But if you’re offended by someone calling you a ‘tranny’” it’s only because you believe you are a tranny! [laughs] The solution is: Change your mind about yourself being a ‘tranny.’.” – RuPaul
