Show Up, Pariahs

Tonight in Baltimore, about 40 people gathered at the foot of the Washington Monument in Mt. Vernon, Baltimore’s Gayborhood. Activist Meredith Moise and the Baltimore Guardian Angels organized  the gathering to condemn anti-gay violence in response to the beating of Kenni Shaw, a gay man,  in East Baltimore on Christmas Day.

This is what the men who attacked Kenni did to him:

Intersectionality Has Its Limitations

December 28, 2012

Why is it that heterosexual third-wave feminists understand “intersectionality” when it comes to everyone except Lesbians?

You know, Lesbians? Your sisters? Your sisters who love other Women (and by Women, I mean Women – not Trans Women).

A friend alerted me to a discussion on the Guerrilla Feminism Facebook page, run by a Woman named Lachrista Greco. I don’t pay much attention to Feminist Facebook pages, as they tend to ban Radical Feminist discussions, and I had never heard of Greco until two days ago.

Greco made a statement on her page that “Transphobia will not be tolerated” in response to a thread that devolved into a “what about the transwomen” discussion.

And she banned Women. A lot of Women (including me, because I am mean and scary).

The “transphobia” was, of course, Women, many of whom are Lesbian, stating that “transwomen are men.”

This statement – that transwomen are men – is KIND OF REALLY IMPORTANT for Lesbians.

Why? [...]

It’s the Same Male Violence

“I don’t believe rape is inevitable or natural. If I did, I would have no reason to be here. If I did, my political practice would be different than it is. Have you ever wondered why we [women] are not just in armed combat against you? It’s not because there’s a shortage of kitchen knives in this country. It is because we believe in your humanity, against all the evidence.” - Andrea Dworkin

Last Friday, Adam Lanza murdered Women and Children in Newtown, Connecticut with a .223-caliber Bushmaster, a semi-automatic civilian version of the military’s M-16. It’s similar to the weapon used in the 2002 sniper killings in the Washington, D.C., area and in the recent Portland, Oregon shopping mall shooting. Both the D.C. sniper attacks and the Clackamas Mall shooting were perpetrated by Men - as most of these spree killings are.

As most lethal violence is.

Under U.S. President Bill Clinton, Congress, with both chambers controlled by Democrats, banned AR-15-type rifles, including the .223-caliber Bushmaster. Congress enacted this ban in September 1994, shortly before Newt Gingrich took control of the House of Representatives. The assault weapons ban expired in 2004, and Congress, catering to the political clout of the gun-rights lobby, did not renew it. Both chambers of Congress had a Republican majority at the time the assault weapons ban expired, the same party as then-President George W. Bush.

I have been watching – like all of us – the finger pointing over what led Adam Lanza to slaughter Women and Children in an elementary school. Predictably, the Second Amendment people are saying “guns don’t kill people, people kill people.” Predictably, Nancy Lanza, Adam Lanza’s first victim, is being blamed because she owned the guns (legally) that Adam Lanza used to murder Women and Children (oh and by the way, interpersonal family violence is what we call Domestic Violence). Predictably, the Mainstream Media is looking to find a why for this “extreme violence” – Adam Lanza must be “mentally ill” or have some other defect not present in normal Men that caused him to act in a way normal Men would never act.

Normal Men. Normal Violence.

Abnormal Men. Abnormal Violence.

I don’t know where where Normal ends and Abnormal begins. [...]

A Trans Man Walks Into A Man’s Spa…Have You Heard This One Before?

levi pine

this jacket is fab!

Meet Levi Pine.

Levi is a trans man who lives in Chicago and does union organizing. He seems like a good person.

And he’s not trying to invade women-only space, even though I’d welcome him (as he’s actually Female).

It’s Levi’s “actual Femaleness” that led Levi to cross my desk. The Windy City Times reports that Levi has filed a complaint with the Illinois Department of Human Rights for gender identity discrimination.

And what happened? [...]

Cisterhood is Powerful

I need to be honest with you, Internet.

I am completely bored by the conversation about your gender, your gender identity, your gender expression. I find the endless selfies and YouTube introductory videos disturbing and evidence of a nation in the grips of a narcissistic delusion. I am weary of the hyperbole that any trans-critical analysis kills thousands of trans women every year (because, let’s be honest, we all know who kills trans women).

Indeed, trans-critical analysis isn’t that hard, and it is pretty obvious. And writers much more interested in it than I have skillfully unpacked bizarre post-modern concepts like “cisgender.”  So, my interest has waned, significantly, and I have been putting my political attentions towards other things.

But this cisgender thing, it just sticks in my craw.  It has become so completely accepted for Women who consider themselves to be Feminist activists to say things like “Everyone has a sex AND a gender.”  It has become required for supportive allies to affirm that THEY are cisgender. [...]
